Everyone moves, but not all will dance. Everyone wants to travel, but most don’t know how to. Lucid or living it, dreams are the answer. It always has been. It’s a place where inspiration is causal of aspirations; a place where the subconscious is in charge. Dreaming isn’t dead, but maybe it’s forgotten. We all do it, but how well do you remember it?

It’s fascinating how far one can travel by remaining completely still. In Packo’s debut full length vinyl release, he sails the open seas into the liquid dreamscapes with his spin on this trip hop and experimental electronic memoir. Oneironauta [oh-nahy-roh-naw-tuh], scores the stages of sleep with direct influence and freedom from his lucid dream states. In a 10-part instrumental narrative, the unclassifiable works takes the onlooker through a dimly lit transit inside a his mind of the waking world. Diving into the fall of sleep (“Descent”), to the fear and distortion of what’s real (“Disorient”), from the lucid awakening (“Aurora”), to the actual waking where remembering, questioning and forgetting everything occurs (“Memoriam”).

A pipe of the underground hip hop and electronic dance culture in Hawaii, Packo is a turntablist before a DJ, a composer before a crowd-mover. With an ambient, boom bap, classical, and dubstep-driven background, the familiar followers may get a slight hypnic jerk with his latest release. Or expect exactly a blend of it all, a refreshing jolt supplementing the anti-pop shift. By melding the experiences of a seasoned multi-genre aficionado into the ever-changing journey of sound development, the dive into composing has been a deep, dark and delectable one. But the results are simple: make music to think to.

If World music describes the ethnic styles of the traditional developing world, then file this one under “Otherworldly,” where the ethereal crosses the earthly, on a plane full of passerby’s. Although, the transportive properties remain active with unfixed rhythm and structure, Oneironauta is essentially a compendium of rapid-moving scenes in a dream. Oneironautics refers to the ability to travel within a dream on a conscious level. Clearly, an Oneironaut is that traveler.
